In order to study animal intelligence, scientists offered animals a long stick to get food outside their reach.
It was discovered that primates such as chimpanzees used the stick, but elephants didn't.
An elephant can hold a stick with its trunk, but doesn't use it to get food.
Thus it was concluded that elephants are not as smart as chimpanzees.

However, Kandula, a young elephant in the National Zoo in Washington, has recently challenged that belief.
The elephant was given not just sticks but a big square box and some other objects, while some fruit was placed just out of reach above him.
He ignored the sticks but, after while, began kicking the box with his foot, until it right underneath the fruit.
He then stood on the box with his front legs, which enabled him to reach the food with his trunk.

kandula's behavior overturned the conclusion elephants aren't as smart as chimpanzees.
Although elephants cannot use a long stick to get food outside their reach, they can get food by using other objects.
For studying animal intelligence, scientists should offer animals several objects such as long sticks, big square boxes and some others.
Animals that are intelligent enough can choose objects which they can use to get food outside their reach.(70

This dosen't prove elephants are as smart as chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees can use a long stick which is only one item provided.
Being given other tools, they may use them to get food in a proper way.
However the elephant can only use a big box among some tools as a step to reach.
It shows elephants' intelligence but it dosen't show their intelligence is the same as chimpanzees. (68

Elephants aren't as smart as the primates that can break shells by stones or wash potatoes in water with their hands even if elephants can use a big square box.
However elephants have more than sixty-year average length of life and it's more than ten years longer than chimpanzees.
Intelligence is for keeping lives longer but cynically length of life depends on the size of their bodies in reality.(68
